Never iron over zippers, pins, metal rivets, or snaps, since these may scratch the soleplate.  To clean occasional buildup on the soleplate, wipe with a sudsy cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers or metal scouring pads.  Always store iron upright in the heel rest position.

      • Why does the light stay on when the unit is turned off?

The light is a power on light, and it will remain on while unit is plugged into a power outlet. ALWAYS UNPLUG THE IRON AFTER USE.

      • How do I store the iron?

Store the iron in the upright position, never wrap the cord around the iron and empty all water from the iron. It is best not to store the iron in dust prone areas such as a laundry room where dust can settle in the opening of the water reservoir; dust will eventually cause blockage and prevent the iron from steaming.

      • Why does the iron leak while using the "Blast of Steam"?

Pumping the "Blast of Steam" button will cause the chamber to flood and the unit will leak or drip water from the vents. Press button twice, allow the blast of steam to evaporate, then repeat.

      • What type of water should I use?

Please use ordinary tap water. If you have extremely hard water, alternate between tap water and distilled water for use in the iron.

      • What do I do when the iron shuts off and will not come back on?

      • Why does the iron not glide over the material?

The iron must preheat for 5 minutes to allow the thermostat to stabilize, and it must be set on the proper temperature for the type of fabric you're ironing.

      • Why does my iron leak from the steam vents?

"Things that may contribute to this:

        1) Sole plate is not hot enough (Turn temperature control dial to desired temperature. Allow 2 minutes for iron to reach desired temperature)

        2) Using distilled or soft water in the iron (Please use ordinary tap water. If you have extremely hard water, alternate between tap water and distilled water for use in the iron)."

      • What temperature is each setting?

        Nylon 240F, Silk 275F, Polyester 310F, Rayon 330F, Wool 360F, Cotton/Linen 375F. Remember: The average temp. may vary 15 degrees F (+ or -)

      • What causes rusty spots to come out of the steam vents?

Leaving water in the iron when not in use may result in rusty looking steam.

      • What causes the iron not to steam?

Accumulation of minerals in water can block steam vents, preventing water from dripping into the steam chamber.  To clean steam vents before first use, prepare iron for steam ironing and then iron over an old cloth for a few minutes while letting the iron steam.

      • Why will my iron not spray?

Pump the "Spray" button several times to "prime the spray.

The cooking vessels are measured from the bottom of the vessel to the very top of the cooking vessel's rim where the glass lid sits, without overflowing.

        • What is the odor I smell when first using the slow cooker?

The odor is coming from the heating element as it heats up for the first time. This is called “burn off” and is normal. It should subside within the first use.

        • Is it normal for condensation to accumulate on the lid?

Yes. It is normal for condensation to accumulate on both glass and plastic lids. Remember - try not to lift the lid often.

*Helpful hint: Each time the lid is lifted, it lengthens the cooking time.

        • Is the removable crock oven, stovetop, microwave, and dishwasher safe?

The crocks are microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. Do not use on stovetop.

Helpful Hint: Crocks are vulnerable to thermal shock, which is a condition caused by extreme changes in temperature. Never put a hot crock in cold water.

        • How do I remove the hot crock?

Use pot holders of oven mitts to remove the hot crock.

        • Does lifting the lid affect cooking performance?

        • Is it normal for the slow cooker to boil?

A slow simmering boil is normal, however a rapid boil is not.

        • Can I store food in my crock?

Yes, many consumers prep their food in the crock the night before and store it in the refrigerator overnight.  Do not expose the crock to sudden temperature change or the crock may crack.  It is not recommended to store leftovers in the crock because it takes too long for the crock to cool to food safe temperatures.

        • Is it normal for the outside bottom of the crock to be rough?

Yes, the crocks are not glaze finished on the bottom surface.

        • Why does the glass lid sit so loosely on the crock?

The lid is intentionally loose in order to let small amounts of steam escape.

        • Does the crock contain lead?

Proctor Silex specifications applicable to all slow cookers and their components (including the earthenware crocks) prohibits the product from containing any measurable amounts of lead. Furthermore, the factories that manufacture the earthenware crocks for Proctor Silex are certified ceramic production facilities whose ceramic ware is deemed to satisfy FDA heavy metal requirements. Proctor Silex takes all reasonable steps to ensure that the earthenware crocks accompanying our slow cookers provide safe and satisfactory service to our consumers.

        • How do I make yogurt with my yogurt maker?

          1. Start with sterilized equipment to prevent illness and to eliminate unwanted bacteria that could interfere with the good bacteria used for the yogurt-making process.

          2. Most recipes require the milk to be heated to 180°F (82°C). Heating milk changes the structure of the proteins in the milk to make a thicker yogurt. Yogurt can be made without heating the milk; however, the result will be much thinner.

          3. Once the milk is heated, cool it back down to 110°–115°F (43°–46°C), the optimum temperature for incubation of yogurt culture.

          4. Whisk powdered yogurt starter culture or starter live active yogurt into a small amount of the warm milk. Then stir into the remaining milk. Pour into the yogurt container, cover, and place in yogurt maker. Process according to recipe directions or starter culture instructions.

          5. Types of milk, brands of starter culture, starter yogurt, and amount of processing time will all affect the thickness and/or quality of yogurt you make. The longer the processing time, the thicker and more tangy the yogurt. Enjoy experimenting until you find the combination that you like.

        • Can I make vegan yogurt with my yogurt maker?

          Yes you can.

          1. Nondairy yogurt can be made from legume, nut, seed, grain, or coconut milk. Homemade milks culture the best. Purchased milks should contain as few additives as possible.

          2. Choose a thickener to add to the yogurt. Without a thickening agent, vegan yogurt will culture but will not set. Follow package instructions as to whether to add before or after heating the milk.

          3. Heat the milk to 110°F (43°C). Add vegan starter culture and process according to recipe.

          4. Refrigerate to cool. Vegan yogurt will set when chilled. Visit www.foodsafety.gov for more information on safe internal cooking temperatures.

        • Why is my yogurt not forming?

The outcome of your yogurt is dependent on a number of factors, these include: How quickly you warmed your milk initially, how much you cooled your milk after warming, what kind of starter culture you used, what type of milke you used, and how long you processed the yogurt. Make sure to follow the instructions on the starter culture you decide to use for best results.

        • How do I make Greek yogurt with my yogurt maker?

          Making Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is made with the same process as regular yogurt. It is thicker than regular yogurt because the liquid or whey has been strained out.

Line a colander with fine cheesecloth and let drain until it reaches desired thickness. For very thick yogurt, let drain overnight in refrigerator.

Yogurt can also be thickened by adding a small amount of nonfat dry milk, pectin, or gelatin with the starter culture.

The whey has protein and nutrients that can be saved to use in breads, soups, smoothies, and shakes.
